Pick one of the three that you will share with the class next time we are together. Email me the link or the image for that one you wish to present.

In class we continued our discussion about editorials. Use the worksheets to further your understanding of what could and should go into a good editorial. Also there is an example of a good editorial to model your editorial on. Before you leave class come up with a topic for an editorial that you will write for homework. Have a solid rough draft of your editorial for next class.

Round Two with Music. You should have received your first review back. Please note comments. You will do another music review today, but first do a Weekly Reading Assignment. For this WRA you must do it on a music review from an online music magazine (like Rolling Stone or something similar). Once you have done the WRA keep in mind what you read and the style, also keep in mind the remarks from your first attempt. You may pick any song or album you wish. The WRA and the music review should be turned in before you leave.
You may also work on your draft of your sports feature. A draft is due on Monday 12-10-12.

OK... Round 2. The network and web were down last class and I was out and you were not able to do your research and project. Today you had time to complete the report/presentation about a journalism scandal that you will present to the class on Thursday.

We started a discussion about ethics and journalism scandals, and started watching the movie "Shattered Glass".

Talk about format and copyediting. Review copy editing symbols. Practice them on the handouts in class. If time allows you can begin your draft for your feature. Turn in your Weekly Reading Assignment before you go.

We shared the features you found interesting last class and talked about your story ideas for your own feature. Before class was over you were to turn in your story idea, a list of people you will interview and the basic question you will ask. Rough Draft Due Monday, November 5.

Turned in Weekly Reading Assignment.
In class we reviewed 'Types of News' with a focus on Features. Your assignment was to find examples of student journalism on The Flash Online and other student news online and begin to gather ideas of what you might want to write about for a feature story. You will share your ideas with the class on Tuesday. Then you will come up with a topic for a feature story and some question for your interviews.

Today in class you peer edited the interview you started last class and finished for homework. Turn in your interview once it has been reviewed and edited.
We talked about Style Guidelines and the technical rules about punctuation and number usage. Following the information from the Style Guide hand out. Find Five examples of different rules and copy them to a word document and explain what rule is being followed. Direction in the handout.

Get the Quote and get it right. We talked about what it takes t do a good interview. Notes and suggestions on the handout from today. Pair up with a partner and follow the direction on the handout.

Work on Page 19. Turn the facts and quotes into a story. Get your work peer edited and then make corrections. Turn in when finished.

We finished watching the movie Absence Of Malice (short day because of early release). We did not have time to complete the worksheet. You were told to finish filling it out and turn it in on Tuesday. Also ran out of time to collect the weekly reading assignment. Please have that to turn in on Tuesday also.

Collected "Page 18" and your narrative you created from your "Sights & Sounds" activity.
We started a discussion about ethics and thinking about the impact of what you write. To illustrate this point we are watching Absence Of Malice and writing about each of the news reports that appear in the movie. Fill out this worksheet as we watch.

Returned "Page 16" with corrections.
As a group we read "Chapter 3" from the hand out on 9-25-12.
Talked about your "Sights & Sounds" assignment due next class. (See below assigned 10-4-12).
Passed out "Page 18" another list of facts and quotes you need to turn into a thoughtful news story in journalistic style. Watch your format on quotes and have a fantastic lead.
Don't forget your Sights & Sounds for wednesday. Turn your observation notes into a short narrative like the example from the power point.

Turn in Weekly Reading Assignment.
Peer Edit the story you wrote from the info on Page 16 (started last class). Get two students to review your work. Correct any errors. Print and turn in all copies.
Sights and Sounds Power Point.
Your job is to go somewhere and sit for 30 minutes. Observe. Write down EVERYTHING. Write a short narrative of the scene you observed. What you found to be the most interesting part. This is due Wednesday Oct. 10.

Turned in Page 15 and discussed some of the mistakes that tripped you up on that one. Remember the format for quotes. Do Page 16. Create a solid lead then make sure you format quotes correctly. Tomorrow we will peer edit have your story typed and printed or at least ready to be printed as you arrive to class. Weekly Reading Assignment due tomorrow as well.

We discussed Leads and how to prepare to write a news story. Read this hand out as a group.
Then tried to create our own. This is homework if not done in class.

We discussed the leads you wrote last class and you got to try another set (handout here) .
We also read the frist part of chapter 2 of the handouts. Finish reading that chapter for homework and come up with a topic and all the different angles possible to cover it. Do this in writing it will be collected.
** Don't forget your weekly reading assignemnt. Make sure the article you select has one of the Literary Devices we discussed. Cover Sheet is at the bottom of the page.**

Sorry I had that sub unexpectedly today. The handout today was about leads. You should have read the first part together as a large group, then paired up and evaluated the leads that were given as an example. Hopefully you were able to discuss what you thought of each and why. We will do a quick review on that. The last three leads on the last page were poorly written and it was your job to rewrite them and make them better. You could discuss them with your partner, but you each needed to write your own. Make sure you finish that for homework. I will collect them on Friday. Here is the handout if you need it again.
**** Don't forget the Weekly Reading Assignment ***** make sure you find an article that has a literary device we discussed.
