The Crucible Unit - 1st Quarter
This quarter we will investigate the Crucible and several othe r texts. Keep up with your homework and class work on this page. Please email with any questions.
Here is a link that will give you more information about the Salem Witch Trials in the 1600s. The Crucible was written in response to Senator McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee's crusade against supposed communist sympathizers.

September 6 - Speed Day... Class expectations and rules. Quick overview of the unit.
Here are the expectations of what you will learn.
September 8 - Start Daily Vocab. Review of Vocab procedures. In class we took a Grammar Review/Pre-Test to see where you stand with your grammar skills.
Assigned today you must select a fiction book for independent reading. You must bring your book in by 9-20-11. You will be given periodic checks to see that you are reading. We will do one book per quarter. Select a book of a length that would be reasonable for you for that amount of time.

Homework:
1. Pick a book.
2. Write an extended paragraph on something interesting you did over the summer (click here for handout). Follow the FHS English Department MLA format. Due next class.
September 12 - Vocab, Grammar GR1 . In class we began talking about the power of the individual.
No homework
September 14 - Vocab, Grammar GR2. Continue our discussion about the power of the individual. Discussed (Power Point) and took notes on the elements of a good paper.
September 16 - Worked on an outline of a paper for the first focus question for this unit. Homework is to complete the outline and then type the paper. You must have a book selected by Tuesday. Your homework is to bring the book to class to be checked in. Here is the handout for the assignment.
September 20 - Vocab, Grammar GR3. Checked in book and distributed the reading log you need to fill out as you read you book independently. We also continued talking about Individual Power. In class we asked about a time you may not have acted and could. Fill out the quick write form. No homework.
September 22 - Vocab. no homework
September 26 -Vocab, passed back pages and new assignment. You must pick one of focus questions and answer in a thoughtful complete well developed paragraph (click here for hand out)
Started watching the movie Hotel Rowanda. Taking notes.
September 28 - Vocab. Collected homework and finished watching Hotel Rowanda and taking notes. (no homework. do some independent reading).
September 30 - Vocab. Grammar review (GR4). Review the end of the movie and discuss. Homework: using your notes from the movie answer the focus question in a fully developed 5-paragraph essay. Follow the directions on the hand out carefully.

Read and annotate the Article of the Week. Complete the CCR for the article as well.
